Digital menus with NFC for cafés and restaurants

A digital menu makes it easier for cafés, restaurants and bars to change dishes, prices and information without having to print new menus every time.

With NFC Stickers, guests can open your digital menu directly on their smartphone. They simply hold their phone close to the NFC Sticker, after which the menu opens in the browser.

To make the solution accessible to as many guests as possible, we recommend combining NFC and QR codes. Both can lead to exactly the same digital menu: The guest can either tap with their phone or scan the QR code.

Printed menus require ongoing updates

Imagine a busy lunch service where the kitchen suddenly announces that a popular dish has sold out. If the menu only exists in print, staff must inform guests verbally or correct the existing menus.

The same applies when prices change, the seasonal menu is replaced, new dishes are added or opening hours need to be adjusted. Even small changes can mean new printed materials and extra work.

A digital menu makes it possible to keep all information in one place and update it continuously. The NFC Sticker acts as the guest’s shortcut to the menu.

How does a digital menu with NFC work?

The NFC solution is relatively simple. The NFC Sticker will typically contain a link to the webpage where your digital menu is located.

  1. The guest sits down at the table: An NFC Sticker with a short instruction is placed on the table, a sign or a menu holder.
  2. The phone is held close to the NFC Sticker: A compatible smartphone detects the NFC tag and opens the link to the menu.
  3. The QR code works as an alternative: If the guest prefers, the same menu can be opened by scanning a QR code printed on the sticker or placed next to it.
  4. The guest views your digital menu: This could, for example, be a page on your website, a digital menu solution or an external ordering system.
  5. The menu is updated digitally: As long as the NFC tag continues to link to the same address, the content on the page can be changed without replacing the NFC Sticker.

If your digital menu system supports online ordering, the guest can also order directly from their phone. This functionality comes from your menu or ordering system and not from the NFC Sticker itself.

NFC or QR code for a digital menu?

It does not have to be a choice between NFC and QR codes. For digital menus, it often makes the most sense to use both technologies together.

NFC makes it quick to open the menu by holding the phone close to the sticker. The QR code gives the guest an alternative way to open exactly the same link using the phone’s camera.

By combining NFC and QR codes, guests can choose the method they prefer. At the same time, both technologies can be integrated into the same design.

Benefits of NFC Stickers for digital menus

Reduce the need for new printed materials

When the menu is digital, changes to dishes, prices and information can be made without necessarily producing new menus. This can reduce both the use of printed materials and the work involved in replacing them continuously.

Update the menu continuously

If your NFC Sticker links to a fixed web address, the content behind the link can be changed while the NFC tag remains in place.

This makes the solution suitable for, for example, dishes of the day, seasonal menus, changing drinks, opening hours and information about sold-out items.

The guest uses their own phone

There is no need for a screen at every table. The guest opens the menu on their own smartphone via NFC or a QR code.

This also means that the digital menu can contain more information than a traditional menu, such as images, allergen information, different languages or links for ordering, if your chosen digital solution supports it.

Less manual work for staff

When changes are made centrally in the digital menu, the need to correct or replace menus at each individual table is reduced.

This can be especially beneficial for cafés and restaurants where the menu changes frequently.

Where should the NFC Sticker be placed?

NFC Stickers can, for example, be placed on table signs, menu holders, counters or other visible surfaces where guests would naturally look for the menu.

When mounting directly on restaurant and café tables, it is important to choose an NFC Sticker that is suitable for the environment. Tables are typically exposed to liquids, cleaning, heat and frequent contact. We therefore recommend considering placement and cleaning requirements when choosing the solution.

Which NFC Sticker should you choose?

The choice depends on factors such as size, design, surface, placement and which NFC chip will be used.

JM Band® offers, among other options, round NFC Stickers or square printed NFC Stickers.

For a digital menu, the NFC Sticker can, for example, be designed with the restaurant’s logo and a short instruction such as “Tap for menu” or “View menu”, combined with a QR code as an alternative.

A flexible solution for cafés, restaurants and bars

NFC Stickers can be used as a simple physical entry point to an existing digital menu.

The restaurant retains control over the menu itself, while the NFC tag ensures that the guest can quickly find it. If the dish of the day, a price or a drink changes, the information can be updated digitally without necessarily changing the stickers on the tables.

The solution can therefore be relevant for cafés, restaurants, bars, canteens and other places where guests often need access to up-to-date information.

FAQ

The NFC Sticker contains a link to your digital menu. When the guest holds a compatible smartphone close to the NFC Sticker, the link can open directly in the phone’s browser. The menu itself is hosted on your website or in an external menu system and not on the NFC Sticker.

Normally, no. Many newer smartphones can detect NFC tags directly and open the associated link in the browser. However, this may depend on the phone model and settings.

We recommend combining NFC with a QR code that leads to the same digital menu. The guest can either hold their phone close to the NFC Sticker or scan the QR code with the camera. It may also be useful to keep a few printed menus available.

Yes. NFC Stickers can be designed with graphics, text and a QR code while the NFC chip is integrated into the sticker. Both can lead to the same digital menu.

Yes, if the NFC Sticker links to a fixed web address. For example, you can keep the same URL and continuously change the content on the page. This means the NFC tag does not need to be changed every time a dish or price is updated.

The NFC Sticker can open a link to a digital ordering system. Whether the guest can place an order and send it directly to the kitchen therefore depends on the system used by the restaurant. JM Band® provides the NFC Sticker, while the menu and ordering system is a separate solution.

The current production time depends on the selected NFC Sticker, chip and specifications. For our printed NFC Stickers, the production time is typically 12–18 days. Always check the current production time on the product page.

It depends on the selected sticker and the environment. When placing stickers on tables, cleaning, liquids, heat and wear should be taken into account. JM Band® can help assess which NFC solution is best suited to the intended placement.
