4 Ways Tokens and Coins Are Used
Value Coupons (with a currency value)
Tokens and coins are used as exchange mediums to obtain goods, services, or access to an event. Using them instead of paying with currency allows for tracking purchased goods and services, making transactions easier.
Souvenirs
They make perfect little souvenirs from an event. Text and logos are embossed on them in a way that people are very familiar with.
Gaming Chips and Jettons
Tokens and coins are also used as gaming chips, where they often represent some form of valuable item in a game. A very well-known gaming chip is a casino chip (jetton), where plastic chips are used as currency equivalents.
Machines and Devices
Another common application is with vending machines, where tokens and coins are used to trigger a mechanism that starts an automated process. From access control to vending machines, from supermarket shopping carts to washing machines using automated processes saves labor and simplifies things.
New and sophisticated versions of tokens and coins have a near-field communication (NFC) RFID chip embedded in them. When brought close to an RFID scanner, they trigger an automatic mechanism. For example, access to various forms of public transportation, where RFID tokens are used to open a barrier gate or turnstile.
Materials Used in Token and Coin Manufacturing
Metal Tokens
Metal coins and tokens are offered in various types of materials such as brass, aluminium, coated iron, zinc, and others. The main manufacturing method is by striking a blank metal disc against a hard mold, which embosses the discs.
Plastic Tokens
Plastic tokens and coins are made of PVC. They are lightweight and cost-effective. Plastic flakes are melted and injected into a mold under high pressure. Molds are usually made in such a way that a few coins are formed in each injection. Plastic bolts are formed according to the mold they are injected into. This way, logos and text can be raised or recessed from the surface. Printed plastic tokens are produced as flat disks with an edge and then further customized using a UV ink printer or pad printing.
Potato Starch (ECO)
Potato starch tokens are made of a polymer consisting of long chains of glucose units that are linked together. It actually contains two polymers, Amylose, which is a straight chain of glucose units, and Amylopectin, which is a branched polymer also made of glucose units. The potato starch polymer is used in a plastic injection machine just like standard plastic.
Wood, Sawdust, and Resin
Wood coins and tokens are essentially wooden planks. Long sticks (similar to a broomstick) are cut to form discs. It's possible to further customize the discs by pressing on them with ink or laser engraving (burning them).
